Why Justin Trudeau govt in crisis?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government faces new instability after Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), ended his parliamentary alliance with the ruling Liberals. The UK-based news outlet Financial Times reported that the 2022 supply-and-confidence agreement, which allowed Trudeau to govern with NDP support, was officially dissolved by Singh on Wednesday. This decision leaves Trudeau’s minority government vulnerable to potential no-confidence votes, further complicating its future in Ottawa.

In his post on X, Jagmeet stated, ” The deal is done. The Liberals are too weak, too selfish and too beholden to corporate interests to stop the Conservatives and their plans to cut. But the NDP can. Big corporations and CEOs have had their governments. It’s the people’s time”.

The breakdown means the Liberals can no longer count on the automatic backing of the NDP’s 24 members in Canada’s 338-member parliament. Though this move doesn’t immediately trigger a snap election, it raises the possibility of one, as Trudeau could struggle to maintain control without consistent support, according to the UK based news outlet.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed confidence in his ability to manage Canada’s parliament despite the recent political challenges. Speaking at an event in Newfoundland, Trudeau emphasized his focus on governing, telling reporters, “I’ll let others focus on politics.” He expressed hope that the next election would not occur “until next fall,” allowing his government time to implement its agenda, the news outlet BBC reported.

In recent years, Canadians have grown increasingly frustrated over rising inflation and a housing affordability crisis, which has weighed on Trudeau’s popularity. National opinion polls have shown the Liberal Party trailing the opposition Conservatives by around 18 points for months, the news outlet report added.
