“Team India is wearing black armbands today in memory of former Indian cricketer and coach Aunshuman Gaekwad, who passed away on Wednesday,” the BCCI said in its social media account on X formerly known as Twitter. This is India’s first one-day international of 2024 against Sri Lanka, and the build-up for next year’s Champions Trophy starts now. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat in the 1st ODI against India.
Gaekwad (71) died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. He was also the coach of the Indian team that finished runners-up at the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy. Gaekwad was undergoing treatment for blood cancer at the King’s College Hospital in London before returning back to the country last month.
