Former Cabinet Minister and BJP MLA Anil Vij on Sunday asserted that he should be appointed Chief Minister of Haryana if the party emerges victorious in the upcoming assembly elections. Vij’s demand highlights his ambition to lead the state, contingent on the BJP’s success. Vij, the BJP’s senior-most MLA in Haryana and a six-time election candidate believes his seniority and popular demand make him a strong contender for the top post.
“It is up to the high command to decide if I should become CM. If appointed, I would work to transform Haryana’s image,” Vij said while addressing a press conference. His announcement could lead to internal tensions within the BJP, as the party has already endorsed Nayab Singh Saini as its Chief Ministerial candidate. Vij had faced a similar situation in 2014 when he was a leading candidate for the role but was appointed Home Minister instead under Khattar’s administration. His frustration was evident when Saini, a younger member, was chosen over him despite Vij’s seniority.
The Haryana Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with results to be declared on October 8. Vij is contesting from the Ambala Cantonment seat.
