Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday stressed that education should be seen as a societal duty, not a commercial venture, underscoring its pivotal role in shaping India’s future. Speaking at the 4th Convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Delhi, Dhankhar emphasized that investing in education is an investment in the nation’s human resources and future prosperity.
“Education is not commerce; it is a service to society. It is your divine duty to pay back to society through education. This is the best investment you can make for the future,” Dhankhar remarked, linking education to India’s long-standing cultural heritage.
Highlighting the importance of research and innovation, Dhankhar urged educational institutions to become “crucibles of innovation,” calling on corporate bodies to contribute generously to this mission. “The advancement in research and innovation will define India’s global stature. Trade and industry must support this cause with financial contributions,” he said.
He also spoke on the crucial role of alumni, urging them to actively engage in strengthening their institutions. “Alumni are the lifeblood of an institution. Active alumni participation can fuel the growth of institutions. Contributions to alumni funds are essential,” Dhankhar said. Addressing the political climate, he cautioned against the growing tendency to demonize constitutional institutions, calling for a renewed sense of responsibility. “The time has come for elites to act with nationalism and work towards the country’s progress,” he added.
In his closing remarks, Dhankhar underscored India’s democratic strength, asserting that the country must reclaim its position as a global leader for peace and harmony, reflecting its core value of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One earth, one family, one future.”
