Jammu, September 25
Polling is underway in 26 constituencies across six districts of Jammu and Kashmir in the second phase of assembly elections on Wednesday. This phase includes 15 seats in the Kashmir Valley and 11 seats in the Jammu division of the Union Territory. Voting began at 7 a.m. and will continue until 6 p.m. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged voters to exercise their democratic right, saying, “Today is the second phase of voting for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. I appeal to all voters to cast their votes and play their important role in strengthening democracy.” said Prime Minister Modi while congratulating first-time voters in his post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
This is Jammu and Kashmir’s first assembly election in a decade, and the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which revoked the region’s special status.
According to the Election Commission of India, around 2.5 million voters are eligible to participate in today’s election across the six districts, which are split evenly between Kashmir Valley and Jammu division, according to the news outlet Mint. The first phase of elections, held on September 18, recorded a 61% voter turnout. The final phase is set for October 1, with votes to be counted on October 8.
