US closes its Kyiv embassy

The US Embassy in Kyiv was closed due to specific intelligence regarding a potential air attack. In a statement, the embassy confirmed that staff have been instructed to shelter in place as a precautionary measure. “The US Embassy in Kyiv has received specific information of a potential significant air attack on November 20. Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy will be closed, and Embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place,” the statement read.

The US government has also urged American citizens in Ukraine to remain alert and be prepared to take immediate shelter if an air alert is announced.

In its advisory, the embassy recommended the following actions:

  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Identify shelter locations ahead of any air alerts
  • Take shelter immediately if an air alert is issued
  • Follow the instructions of Ukrainian authorities and emergency responders
