Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday intensified his protectionist trade agenda by proposing a 200 percent  tariff on vehicles imported from Mexico, a move aimed at bolstering U.S. auto production ahead of the November 5 election. Trump, who had earlier pledged a 100 percent tariff on imported cars and trucks, escalated his rhetoric at a rally in Juneau, Wisconsin, the news outlet CNBCTV18 reported.

. “We’ll put a tariff of 200% on if we have to,” he said, targeting the nearly 3 million Mexican-made vehicles imported to the U.S. in 2023. While his proposal seeks to support the domestic auto industry, critics warn it could lead to higher vehicle prices for American consumers.
