President-elect Donald Trump has advised Russian President Vladimir Putin to avoid escalating the war in Ukraine, underscoring U.S. military power in Europe in their first phone conversation since Trump’s election victory, the US based news outlet The Washington Post reported. The call, held from Trump’s Florida residence, highlighted Trump’s desire for a peaceful resolution on the European continent and his openness to future talks aimed at ending the conflict.
According to the news outlet sources close to the matter disclosed that Trump briefly floated the idea of a peace agreement that may involve Russia holding some of the territories captured during the war. The conversation signals a potential shift in US-Russia relations as Trump prepares to reset diplomatic ties and re-evaluate global alliances.
The Washington Post also reported Trump’s outreach to around 70 global leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk joining that call. Trump has publicly expressed an interest in brokering peace but has yet to provide specifics on his strategy.
