Israel targeted Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, while the Iran-backed militant group retaliated by launching rockets into northern Israel. This escalation follows a wave of Israeli airstrikes that reportedly resulted in over 500 deaths in Lebanon and prompted tens of thousands to flee for safety, the UK based news outlet The Guardian reported.

As part of its intensified aerial offensive, Israel has declared its intent to escalate military actions, leading to the deadliest day for Lebanon since the war nearly two decades ago, as noted by NBC News. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for targeting multiple Israeli military sites overnight, including an explosives factory located about 35 miles (60 km) inside Israel and the Megiddo airfield near Afula, which it struck three times. Israeli officials reported that over 50 rockets were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel on Tuesday morning, with most intercepted, as per The Guardian.

The ongoing conflict has raised concerns about a potential wider regional war involving the United States, a close ally of Israel, and Iran, which has established proxies throughout the Middle East. Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, voiced concerns about a potential escalation but emphasized that Hezbollah, which Iran helped establish in 1983, “cannot stand alone” against Israel. In an interview with CNN, translated from Farsi to English, Pezeshkian stated, “Hezbollah cannot stand alone against a country that is being defended and supported and supplied by Western countries, by European countries, and the United States,” The Guardian reported.
