The Supreme Court on Friday directed a lower court in Sambhal of Uttar Pradesh, to halt proceedings related to the survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The trial court had earlier permitted the survey after a civil suit claimed the mosque was built on the site of a demolished Hindu temple. The Supreme Court instructed the mosque’s management committee to challenge the trial court’s order before the Allahabad High Court. It emphasized that peace and harmony must be preserved during the proceedings.
The Court noted that should an appeal be filed, it would be heard within three working days. The trial court is scheduled to hear the case on January 8, 2025, but proceedings are to remain suspended until the High Court issues a ruling. The Supreme Court clarified that it has not yet expressed an opinion on the matter.
