The Supreme Court of India has implemented Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to aid in translating judicial documents, marking a significant step towards enhancing access to justice. The technology has also been utilised to transcribe oral arguments, particularly in Constitution Bench cases, since February 2023. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha, revealed that a Committee, chaired by a Supreme Court Judge, has been established to oversee the translation of key judgments into regional languages. This Committee holds regular discussions with sub-committees in high courts to expedite the translation process.
Currently, 17 high courts have begun translating Supreme Court and High Court judgments into regional languages through the e-High Court Reports (e-HCR) and e-Indian Law reports (e-ILR) initiatives. The AI Translation Committees are also urging state governments to translate central and state laws, regulations, and rules into regional languages, ensuring public access via state websites. This effort aligns with the constitutional mandate of “access to justice.”
“ Till November 25, 36,316 Supreme Court judgments have been translated into Hindi, while 42,457 judgments have been translated into 17 other regional languages. These translations are available on the e-SCR portal. No separate funding has been allocated for this translation project,” he added.
