The Supreme Court on Friday criticized the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) for not taking sufficient measures to curb pollution in Delhi and nearby areas. A Bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih observed that while the commission has made some efforts, it has not lived up to the Court’s expectations in fulfilling its responsibilities, despite having extensive powers, including the authority to shut down polluting units, according to Delhi based news outlet Bar and Bench.

“We cannot say that the commission has not taken any action, but the Amicus is right in stating that it has not performed as expected. Though the Commission has taken certain steps, it must be more proactive and ensure that its directives lead to tangible improvements in reducing pollution,” the Supreme Court stated.

The Court also noted that the CAQM might not be holding enough meetings or issuing sufficient directives to address violations of environmental regulations, further stressing the need for more decisive action.
