In a significant diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday. This marks the first state visit by a foreign leader to India since PM Modi’s government began its third consecutive term. The bilateral talks are set to cover a comprehensive range of topics aimed at strengthening ties between the two neighbouring countries.
The discussions are expected to focus on defence collaboration, with a new defence pact likely to be signed. Enhanced connectivity and infrastructure development are also high on the agenda, alongside cooperation in power and energy sectors. The two leaders will explore ways to bolster trade and economic partnership, and discussions on a financial package and a rail transit agreement are anticipated. Additionally, the contentious issue of river water-sharing will be addressed, with both sides aiming for an amicable resolution.
Prime Minister Hasina, who arrived in Delhi on Friday, is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar later in the day. The visit underscores the deep cultural ties and historical connection between India and Bangladesh, with both nations looking to further strengthen their relationship through development cooperation and cultural exchange programs.
