OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has denied accusations of financial and sexual abuse made by his sister, calling them “untrue” and attributing the claims to mental health challenges she has faced. In response, Altman issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), co-signed by his family members, expressing their concern for his sister’s well-being. “Our family loves her and is very concerned about her well-being,” the statement read. “Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult. Over the years, we have tried in many ways to support her and help her find stability.” Altman’s family outlined their efforts to support his sister, including providing monthly financial assistance, paying bills, covering rent, helping her find employment, and offering to purchase a house through a trust to ensure secure living arrangements.
In a lawsuit filed against Altman, his sister alleged that the sexual abuse began when she was three years old, and Altman was 12. The lawsuit also requested a jury trial and sought damages exceeding $75,000 (£60,100).
Despite these efforts, the family stated, Altman’s sister continued to demand more financial support and has made what they described as “deeply hurtful and entirely untrue” claims about them, particularly Sam. The family revealed that her allegations have evolved over time, now including incidents that allegedly occurred after Altman turned 18. “She has accused members of our family of withholding our late father’s 401k funds, hacking her Wi-Fi, and ‘shadowbanning’ her from websites like ChatGPT and Twitter,” the statement said. “The most devastating allegation is that she was sexually abused by Sam. Her claims have changed significantly over time and are completely untrue.”
The lawsuit has brought the family’s struggles into the public eye, forcing them to respond. Altman described the situation as “immensely painful,” adding, “It is especially gut-wrenching when she refuses conventional treatment and lashes out at family members who are genuinely trying to help.” The family concluded the statement by asking for understanding and compassion from the public. “We sincerely hope she finds the stability and peace she’s been searching for,” they said.
