Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the National Conference (NC) legislature party leader on Thursday, positioning him to stake a claim to form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir. Four independent lawmakers have extended their support to the NC, further strengthening the party’s position.

Omar Abdullah is expected to meet with allies, including the Congress, on Friday to finalize their strategy. His father, NC chief Farooq Abdullah, had earlier announced on October 8 that Omar Abdullah would take over as the Chief Minister.

The National Conference-Congress alliance won a decisive victory in the recent elections, securing 49 out of the 90 seats in the assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 29 seats.
