A tragic incident occurred when a nurse was raped and murdered while returning from a private hospital in Uttarakhand to her residence near the Uttar Pradesh border. On the evening of July 30, she left the hospital and was captured on CCTV taking an e-rickshaw from Indra Chowk in Rudrapur. However, she never arrived at her rented accommodation on Kashipur Road, Bilaspur, where she lived with her 11-year-old daughter, the NDTV reported.

After she failed to return home, her sister reported her missing the following day. On August 8, Uttar Pradesh police discovered her body in an abandoned plot about 1.5 km from her home in Dibdiba village.

The accused, Dharmendra, a daily wage laborer from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested in Rajasthan on Wednesday. The police tracked him down using the victim’s stolen mobile phone. According to officials, the accused, who was intoxicated at the time, followed the victim, attacked her as she was about to enter her apartment building, dragged her into nearby bushes, raped, and strangled her with her scarf. He also stole her phone and ₹3,000 from her purse.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage, echoing another recent case where a woman trainee doctor was raped and murdered during her duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The brutal events have renewed demands for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals, with resident doctors nationwide urging the implementation of the Central Healthcare Protection Act to safeguard healthcare workers.
