Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday emphasized the need for global unity in combating terrorism and terror financing, rejecting double standards on the issue. Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s stance on diplomacy and dialogue, noting, “We support dialogue and diplomacy, not war.” He also called for global cooperation in combating terrorism, warning that “there is no place for double standards on this serious matter.” Modi urged nations to stop the radicalization of youth and to work toward a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations.
Turning to economic and institutional reforms, Modi stressed the need for consensus-driven decisions within BRICS, particularly regarding the expansion of the group. “India is ready to welcome new countries into BRICS as partner countries, but all decisions should be taken by consensus, respecting the views of founding members.”
Modi also called for time-bound reforms of global institutions like the UN Security Council, multilateral development banks, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). “We must ensure that BRICS is seen as a force for reform, not replacement, of global institutions,” Modi said during his address at the BRICS summit in Russia.added.
The Prime Minister concluded by noting the growing influence of BRICS and its attraction to other nations, emphasizing that “BRICS is an organization willing to evolve with time. Together, we will continue to make this platform a model for dialogue, cooperation, and coordination.”
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to President Putin for the wonderful organization of today’s meeting. I warmly welcome all the new friends that have joined the BRICS family,” Modi said, while congratulating Putin for Russia’s successful presidency of BRICS over the past year.
Modi highlighted the global challenges facing the world, including wars, economic uncertainty, climate change, and terrorism. “Our meeting is taking place at a time when the world is facing several pressing challenges, such as the North-South divide, the East-West divide, and new technological issues like cyber disinformation and deepfakes,” he added.
In his address, Modi emphasized the importance of BRICS in addressing these global concerns, stating that “BRICS can play a positive role in all areas as a diverse and inclusive platform.” He underscored the importance of a people-centric approach, emphasizing that BRICS must send a message that it works in the interest of humanity, not division.
