NASA is closely monitoring a massive asteroid named 2024 ON, which is approaching Earth at high speed. The asteroid, measuring approximately 350 meters in length and 180 meters in width (about 1,150 feet by 590 feet), has been described as “stadium-sized, the news outlet Fox News Digital reported.
Davide Farnocchia, a navigation engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said that an asteroid of this size coming this close to Earth happens roughly every five to ten years. He added that the last significant meteor to enter Earth’s atmosphere was in Russia in 2013, and Earth hasn’t been struck by an asteroid of this size since prehistoric times, the news outlet said.
While 2024 ON is classified as a “potentially hazardous object,” Farnocchia reassured that there is no risk of collision. The asteroid would need to come within a few hundred miles of Earth to pose a threat, and NASA’s calculations show no possibility of a collision in the next hundred years.
