The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to former Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik on medical grounds in a money laundering case. According to News 18, a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma took into account the arguments made by Malik’s counsel regarding his multiple health issues. The court stipulated that the medical bail will remain in effect until the Bombay High Court makes a decision on Malik’s regular bail application.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), did not object to the granting of bail and suggested that the interim medical bail could be made permanent. Malik was taken into custody by the ED in February 2022, in connection with a case purportedly linked to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates, the news outlet News 18 said.
Malik, who suffers from chronic kidney disease and other ailments, sought relief from the high court on these medical grounds. The ED’s charges against Malik stem from an FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Ibrahim, a globally designated terrorist and a principal accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, and his associates under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the news outlet report said.
