The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday dismissed reports by Reuters that claimed Indian defence exports had been diverted to Ukraine, calling them “speculative and misleading.” The news agency Reuters on September 19, reported that artillery shells sold by Indian arms manufacturers were being redirected by European customers to Ukraine. “According to 11 Indian and European government and defence industry officials, as well as an analysis of customs data, the Indian government had not intervened to stop this trade, despite protests from Moscow. The transfer of munitions supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russia had reportedly been happening for over a year,” the news agency further said.
In response, MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that “we have seen the Reuters report. It is speculative and misleading. It implies violations by India, where none exist, and, hence, is inaccurate and mischievous.” He emphasized that India has a spotless track record of complying with international obligations regarding military and dual-use exports. India adheres to a strict legal framework for defence exports, taking into account non-proliferation responsibilities, end-user obligations, and certifications.
