In a strong response to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, doctors across India have launched a 24-hour strike, shutting down non-emergency medical services nationwide, according to media reports. The heinous crime, which occurred within the medical college where the victim worked, has ignited widespread anger and solidarity among medical professionals.
The tragic case of the doctor who was raped and murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata has taken a grim turn, with evidence suggesting gang rape. Her parents, in a petition to the Calcutta High Court, had revealed that the post-mortem report indicated a significant amount of semen—150 mg—was found in her body, pointing to the involvement of multiple perpetrators, according to the news outlet NDTV. The petition also stated that the cause of death was strangulation and that there were clear signs of sexual assault, further corroborating their worst fears. The Calcutta High Court has already transferred the investigation to the CBI.
In addition to it, Dr. Subarna Goswami, in an interview with India Today recently emphasized that the nature of the injuries inflicted on the young doctor could not have been the work of a single individual. Dr. Goswami noted that the post-mortem report mentioned 151 grams of liquid found in the vaginal swab, which strongly suggests the involvement of multiple assailants.
In a shocking and heartbreaking revelation, the family of the doctor was initially told that their daughter had died by suicide, according to media reports. The victim’s father had told the media that he received a call from an official at the hospital’s chest medicine department, who informed him, “Your daughter has died by suicide.” the Mint reported.
However, when the family arrived at the hospital, they were confronted with a far more horrifying reality. The father noted that the official did not identify himself during the call, the NDTV reported.
The family’s ordeal worsened when they pleaded with hospital authorities to see their daughter’s body. “After three hours, they allowed the father to go inside and see her body. He was only allowed to take a picture, which he showed us when he came outside. She had no clothes on her body. Her legs were 90 degrees apart… this cannot happen unless the pelvic girdle breaks, which means she was torn apart,” a relative recounted to Lallantop. The case has also raised serious concerns among the victim’s colleagues, who reported sudden civil reconstruction work at the crime scene within the hospital.
