The postmortem report of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital confirmed that she was brutally raped and murdered. The findings reveal severe physical trauma, sparking nationwide outrage and calls for a safer environment for women in India.

According to India Today, the report detailed multiple crescentic abrasions on both of the victim’s cheeks, as well as injuries on her lips, nose, jaw, neck, arm, shoulder, knee, and various other parts of her body. Notably, “sucking” marks were found on the anterior surface of her neck, adding to the evidence of violence.

A crucial detail in the report is the discovery of a “white thick viscid liquid” in her endocervical canal. Tests are ongoing to identify the nature of this liquid, which may be key to resolving the case.

Another news outlet The Print highlighted that the victim sustained 16 external and 9 internal injuries, consistent with “sexual assault.” A team of three doctors, including two women, conducted the autopsy on August 9, concluding that the cause of death was “manual strangulation associated with smothering” and the manner of death was “homicidal.”

The Kolkata Police initially handled the investigation, providing the report only to the victim’s parents. However, following a Calcutta High Court order, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 13. The postmortem report, though not attached to the petition filed by the parents, was referenced, suggesting the presence of 150 mg of semen in the hymen, raising suspicions of gang rape. However, the parents’ lawyer, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, clarified that the report mentions a “white liquid,” not semen, possibly due to a typographical error, The Print reported.
