A Karnataka High Court judge declined a woman’s plea for a monthly alimony of ₹6 lakh from her ex-husband, suggesting that she could earn if she desired to spend such an amount. A widely circulated video from the court proceedings shows the woman’s advocate requesting ₹6,16,300 per month, which the judge deemed unreasonable, as reported by the news outlet The Hindustan Times.

The woman’s lawyer argued that she required ₹4-5 lakh per month for medical expenses, including knee pain treatment and physiotherapy, along with ₹50,000 for personal items such as bangles and sandals, and an additional ₹60,000 for food. The lawyer also noted that the ex-husband wears expensive branded clothing, while the woman is left with older dresses.

The judge responded by questioning the legitimacy of the demand, emphasizing that alimony should not be punitive towards the husband and noting that the woman has no other familial responsibilities. The judge concluded that if the woman wished to maintain such a lifestyle, she should earn the required amount herself.
