Justice Sanjiv Khanna sworn in as 51st Chief Justice of India

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday administered the oath of office to Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.Justice Khanna, born on May 14, 1960, began his legal career in 1983, enrolling with the Bar Council of Delhi. He initially practiced in Tis Hazari’s District Courts before transitioning to the Delhi High Court, where he specialized in fields including constitutional law, commercial law, environmental law, and medical negligence. Known for his work in tax law, he served as Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and later represented the National Capital Territory of Delhi as Standing Counsel (Civil) in 2004.

Appointed to the Delhi High Court in 2005, Khanna was elevated to a permanent judge in 2006. He held significant roles, including Chairman of the Delhi Judicial Academy and leadership positions in arbitration and mediation centers.

Justice Khanna joined the Supreme Court in 2019 and served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee earlier this year. Currently, he is the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and a Governing Council member of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal. His tenure as Chief Justice of India will continue until his retirement on May 13, 2025.
