Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, emphasized the importance of specialized science journalism in driving innovation and public understanding at the Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan National Awards for Excellence 2024. During the ceremony, held in memory of the late journalist Mangalam Swaminathan, Dr. Singh stressed that effective science communication is vital for translating technological advancements into societal benefits.
Dr. Singh recognized Mangalam Swaminathan as a pioneer in science journalism in India, a field that was still developing when she began her career. He underscored the need for specialized science journalists, noting that in India, reporters often juggle multiple topics, limiting expertise in niche areas such as science reporting.
The awards celebrated individuals for excellence in various fields: P. Narayanan for Excellence in Journalism, Umendra Dutt for Excellence in Science Reporting, and others for contributions to art, culture, and medical investigations. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi was also honored with the Dattopant Thengadi Seva Samman 2024.
Dr. Singh highlighted India’s growing global role in science and technology, citing achievements in quantum technology and bio-economy policy as key drivers of the nation’s future industrial revolution. He also praised the “Purple Revolution” Lavender Start-Up movement for empowering young entrepreneurs through scientific innovation.
The Minister called for greater focus on science literacy and communication, encouraging initiatives such as workshops and courses to train future science communicators, ensuring Dr. Swaminathan’s legacy continues.
