Israeli forces have killed Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas Gaza chief and key architect of last year’s attack on Israel, the military announced on Thursday. Sinwar was held responsible for orchestrating the October 7, 2023, attack that ignited the ongoing conflict. US President Joe Biden, speaking from Air Force One, called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on Sinwar’s elimination.

“Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization responsible for the October 7 massacre, is dead,” said IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari. “Our mission continues. We will not rest until we have secured the return of all our hostages by any means necessary.”

Hagari detailed Sinwar’s role in the brutal invasion, in which Hamas militants crossed into Israel, killing civilians, raping women, and taking over 250 hostages. He added that 101 hostages remain in captivity under harsh conditions in Gaza.

“For the past year, Sinwar tried to escape justice, but he failed. We vowed to find him and bring him to justice, and we did it,” Hagari said. He reiterated that Israel’s war is against Hamas, not the people of Gaza, and emphasized ongoing efforts to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into the region.
