Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya has declared his candidacy for the position of Prime Minister of Canada in the upcoming federal elections. A member of the Canadian House of Commons since 2015, Arya is known for his active involvement in political and cultural matters. Originally from Dwarlu village in Karnataka’s Tumkur district, Arya holds an MBA from the Kousali Institute of Management Studies in Dharwad. He immigrated to Canada in 2006 and rose to political prominence, winning federal elections in 2015 and 2019.
In November 2022, Arya made headlines by raising a triangular saffron flag featuring the ‘Om’ symbol outside the Canadian Parliament to mark Hindu Heritage Month. He is also vocal in his criticism of Khalistani elements in Canada and has consistently promoted Indian cultural heritage.
Announcing his candidacy in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Arya said, “I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a small, more efficient government to rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations. We face structural problems unseen for generations, requiring tough choices.”
He highlighted affordability and economic challenges as urgent priorities. “Many Canadians, especially younger generations, face significant affordability issues. The middle class is struggling, and families are retiring into poverty. Bold decisions are necessary to rebuild the economy, restore hope, and secure opportunities for future generations,” Arya added.
Arya also confirmed his intention to contest for the leadership of the Liberal Party, pledging to bring “prudence and pragmatism” to his governance. He urged Canadians to join his vision of revitalizing the nation, promising detailed policy proposals on his website, AryaCanada.ca, set to go live later today.
