India seeks early repatriation of 20 nationals in Russian army

NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 23

 Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, disclosed ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Indian nationals serving in the Russian army. While addressing a press briefing in Kazan,Misri said that about 20 cases are being pursued, with hopes of early repatriation. Several Indians have already returned in recent months with Russian cooperation.

Misri also provided details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place at the 16th BRICS Summit. Discussions covered trade, defense, energy, and nuclear cooperation, with both sides agreeing to advance joint efforts such as the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. Regional security, including the ongoing Ukraine conflict, was a key topic, where Modi reaffirmed India’s stance on dialogue and diplomacy for resolving disputes.

Economic cooperation was another focal point, with Putin assuring support for stable supply chains in fertilizers and coal to India. The two leaders also confirmed the 25th session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on trade, set to take place in New Delhi this November.

In a separate meeting, Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the Chabahar Port project and the International North-South Transport Corridor. The leaders emphasized enhancing regional connectivity and maintaining stability in Afghanistan. The escalating conflict in West Asia also featured in talks, with Modi urging dialogue to de-escalate tensions and protect civilians.

Misri noted India’s efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation with Russia and Iran through platforms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
