India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has asked Canada to uphold the rule of law following a recent attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton. While addressing a press conference in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the incident, calling for the Canadian government to ensure the security of Hindu temples and bring those responsible to justice. “We condemned the attack on the temple in Brampton and call on the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law and to prosecute those involved,” Jaiswal said.
This condemnation comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar have previously condemned the incident, reinforcing concerns over the protection of Indian communities and religious sites in Canada.
Jaiswal further highlighted ongoing security issues faced by Indian diplomats in Canada, noting surveillance of Indian officials by Canadian authorities. “Indian diplomats being placed under surveillance is unacceptable, and we have taken this up with the Canadian side,” Jaiswal said.
Jaiswal also addressed Canada’s reported blockage of Australian media pages shortly after a press conference held by Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. He pointed to this move as evidence of a double standard on freedom of speech in Canada.
Reflecting on India’s ties with the U.S., Jaiswal commented on Prime Minister Modi’s recent dialogue with former U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing India’s commitment to further strengthening its multifaceted partnership with the US.
