Sports injuries can be difficult to identify since the symptoms are not always reliable indicators of their severity. However, IIT Madras has developed a new portable scanner that promises to offer clear assessment and will help to make informed decisions.

The device is called the POCUS or portable point-of-care ultrasound scanner. It can scan any part of the body to differentiate between minor inflammation and serious muscle tears or more. It was developed by Arun K. Thittai from IIT Madras’ Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering. He and his team are based at IIT’s Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA).

“Traditionally, larger scanners have been associated with better image quality. But this portable device changes that—it’s compact, affordable, and delivers high-quality images,” said Thittai. AI integration helps assess the extent of injuries more precisely, allowing coaches and physios to tailor training plans to individual athletes’ needs and physical conditions. The prototype will undergo testing in collaboration with sports authorities to collect pilot data.
