New Delhi, October 11

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday underscored the increasing relevance of unconventional and asymmetric warfare in future conflicts, stating that hybrid warfare would play a significant role in conventional wars. “This is evident from recent conflicts around the world. Our Armed Forces must consider these aspects when planning strategies,” the Defence Minister said while addressing the Army Commanders’ Conference virtually from Sukhna, owing to bad weather in Gangtok.

Singh emphasized the need for continuous modernization and preparedness in the Armed Forces to tackle evolving threats. “We must learn from global incidents, both past and present, to minimize damage and stay ahead. Being alert, regularly upgrading, and preparing for various contingencies is essential,” he added.

On the situation along the northern borders, the Defence Minister expressed confidence in the Indian Army’s readiness for any contingency, while assuring that peaceful dialogue with adversaries will continue at all levels. He also commended the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for improving road infrastructure in the western and northern borders despite challenging conditions, urging continued progress in this area.

Regarding the western borders, the Defence Minister praised the Army’s response to cross-border terrorism, though he warned that the adversary’s proxy war continues. “The synergy between the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), police, and the Army in Jammu and Kashmir has been instrumental in maintaining stability and peace,” he said, noting that this was evident in the successful elections held in the Union Territory.

Singh also commended the Army’s high standards of operational preparedness, which he has witnessed firsthand during visits to forward areas. He paid tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation, and praised the Indian Army’s role in military diplomacy, helping to strengthen national security by fostering cooperative relationships with foreign armies.

The Defence Minister further highlighted the Indian Army’s outstanding performance in the 2024 Olympic Games, particularly its sportspersons. He also lauded the Armed Forces for their contributions to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, noting that their participation serves as a model for the rest of the country.

Singh emphasized the importance of technological advancement, applauding the Army’s efforts to develop niche technologies in collaboration with civil industries and educational institutions. He reiterated the government’s focus on “Modernisation through Indigenisation” or ‘Atmanirbharta,’ stating that upgrading weapons and equipment for every soldier is a key priority. “The government stands fully behind the Armed Forces in their modernization efforts,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, the Defence Minister stressed the importance of defense diplomacy, indigenization, and information warfare. He urged that war preparedness should be a continuous process, emphasizing that the nation must always be ready for uncertainties and unpredictable situations. “The nation is proud of its Army, and the government is committed to supporting the Army on its journey of reforms and capability modernization,” the Defence Minister said.
