The Himachal Pradesh government will launch the ‘Nasha Mukt Himachal Abhiyan,’ a statewide initiative to combat the rising problem of drug abuse, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Sunday.
The campaign will focus on prevention, early identification of users, and rehabilitation, Sukhu said, describing drug abuse as one of the biggest threats to society, affecting public health, social stability, and the economy, the Chief Minister said.
“Our government is committed to addressing this challenge head-on,” Sukhu said, adding that the initiative aims to safeguard future generations and ensure the state’s long-term social and economic well-being.
The initiative will engage multiple government departments, including Education, Health, Police, Rural Development, and Youth Services and Sports, along with local bodies such as Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), Yuvak Mandals, Mahila Mandals, and NGOs. The focus will be on creating widespread awareness, especially in high-risk areas such as industrial zones, the state capital, educational institutions, and municipal corporations.
The campaign will also incorporate an extensive social media outreach along with on-ground programs. In support of rehabilitation efforts, the government plans to establish detoxification and counselling centres at government hospitals and community health centres (CHCs), equipped with 5-10 beds and diagnostic facilities. Additionally, the government is upgrading infrastructure to strengthen rehabilitation services.CM further added that a specialised force to combat drug-related crimes is being developed, and an advisory board has been set up to guide the campaign’s strategy. The Police Department has also issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to help officials tackle drug trafficking and related issues more effectively.
