The death toll in Gujarat has risen to 28 following days of relentless rainfall that has caused severe flooding across the state. Over 17,800 people have been evacuated from affected areas, with more than 5,000 rehabilitated and over 12,000 rescued in Vadodara alone, the news outlet Hindustan Times reported quoting Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, offering full support for the ongoing rescue and relief efforts. CM Patel shared on X that the Prime Minister also provided guidance on addressing sanitation and public health challenges in the flood-affected regions, the news outlet said.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the entire state due to a deep depression moving from East Rajasthan toward the Saurashtra region, which is causing heavy rainfall. The Gujarat government has sought assistance from six Army columns for urgent relief operations, as several districts face severe flooding. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has rescued 95 people in the past two days, with hundreds more displaced or stranded due to the flooding.
Gujarat has already received 105 percent of its average annual rainfall, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC). Several districts in Saurashtra, including Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, and Rajkot, have experienced particularly heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, the news outlet further said.
