New Delhi, December 11

The central government is actively monitoring wheat prices and taking measures to ensure price stability and prevent hoarding. The 2024 Rabi season recorded production of 113.2 million tonnes, confirming ample availability of wheat. To safeguard food security, stock limits were imposed on traders, retailers, processors, and big-chain retailers across all states and union territories through amendments to the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. Entities must register on the wheat stock portal and update stock positions weekly. Violations of stock limits will attract penalties under the Act.

The government has directed entities exceeding prescribed stock limits to comply within 15 days of notification. The Department of Food and Public Distribution continues to monitor the situation to ensure steady supply and price stability.
