Punjab Finance and Planning Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced a new agreement with Canara Bank to provide free insurance for mid-day meal cooks and helpers across the state. Under the scheme, all workers who open zero-balance accounts with Canara Bank will receive insurance coverage, including Rs 16 lakh for accidental death, Rs 1 lakh for natural death, and Rs 2 lakh for accidental death of a spouse.

During a meeting with the Mid-Day Meal Cooks Union Punjab (BMS), Cheema also revealed that the Punjab cabinet sub-committee has requested the Union Government to increase the cooks’ monthly salary from Rs 600 to Rs 2000. Additionally, the state has proposed an update to staffing ratios, recommending one cook per 50 students to ensure improved meal preparation.

Cheema directed officials to expedite provisions like aprons, caps, and gloves for workers and to explore creating backup posts at the block level to manage staffing shortages. The initiative underscores the Punjab government’s commitment to improving working conditions and financial security for mid-day meal workers, enhancing their role in student welfare.
