Chandigarh, September 2

Hundreds of farmers, under the banners of the BKU (Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union (PKMU), have staged a dharna at the Sector 34 Carnival Ground in Chandigarh demanding the implementation of a comprehensive agriculture policy, efforts to curb the drug menace in the state, distribution of land to landless laborers and farmers, environmental protection, and the promotion of chemical-free crop production. The farmers will also submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister at the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to address these issues.

Speaking to the media on August 31, PKMU General Secretary Lachhman Singh said that the farmers would march to the Vidhan Sabha to present their memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister. He emphasized that the dharna would continue until September 4, coinciding with the conclusion of the Vidhan Sabha session. He  added that if their demands are not addressed during the Assembly session, the farmers will hold another meeting on September 5 to decide whether to return home or continue their protest in Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Police have issued an advisory for commuters due to Kisan rally in Sector 34. To avoid potential traffic disruptions, residents and travelers are advised to use alternative routes.
