Farmers protest: SC forms committee to amicably resolve grievances

New Delhi, September 2

In a significant move regarding the ongoing farmers’ protest, the Supreme Court on Monday formed a committee led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Nawab Singh, to peacefully address the grievances of farmers protesting at the Shambhu border. The Supreme Court instructed the committee to hold its first meeting within a week. The Haryana government had previously installed barricades on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway in February after the ‘Samyukta Kisan Morcha’ (Non-Political) and ‘Kisan Mazdoor Morcha’ announced plans for farmers to march to Delhi, advocating for demands such as a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for their crops. The court was responding to a plea from the Haryana government, which contested a high court order mandating the removal of barricades at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been stationed since February 13.
