Chandigarh, September 2

Hundreds of farmers, representing the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union (PKMU), protested against the non-fulfillment of their demands and submitted a memorandum to the Punjab government. They were demanding a comprehensive agriculture policy, stronger measures to tackle the drug crisis in the state, allocation of land to landless laborers and farmers, environmental conservation, and the promotion of chemical-free farming practices. The farmers criticized both the state and central governments for failing to address their ongoing concerns. The protestors are currently staging a dharna at the Sector 34 Carnival Ground in Chandigarh.

Responding to the protest, Punjab’s Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian, acting on the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, met with the protesting farmers at Matka Chowk. The Minister received their memorandum and reassured them that their welfare is a top priority for the Punjab government.

Emphasizing the Punjab Government’s dedication to its farmers, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian assured that their demands would be carefully discussed with the Chief Minister and handled with genuine concern. He extended an invitation to the farmers for a dialogue with the state government, underscoring the commitment of the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann-led administration to engage with farmers, listen to their issues, and resolve their concerns effectively.
