In a bold move, US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”). Despite its name, the department will not function as a formal government agency but will aim to reshape federal bureaucracy, streamline regulations, and cut wasteful expenditures.

In a statement, Trump praised Musk and Ramaswamy as key figures who would drive substantial reform in the U.S. government. “I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency,” Trump said. “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies—essential to the ‘Save America’ movement.”he said.

Musk, known for his ambitious ventures such as SpaceX and Tesla, emphasized the disruptive potential of the department. “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!” Musk said. “It will become, potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time.”

Trump also outlined the goals of the initiative, saying, “Elon and Vivek will work to drive out the massive waste and fraud in our $6.5 trillion annual government spending. Their work will culminate by July 4, 2026—a smaller government with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, a perfect gift for America’s 250th anniversary.”

The announcement was also shared by Musk on his X (formerly Twitter) account, signaling the beginning of what is promised to be a sweeping overhaul of the U.S. government’s operational structure.
