India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three flight-tests of the 4th-generation miniaturised Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) on October 3 and 4 at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.
The tests targeted high-speed objects, demonstrating key parameters like maximum range and altitude interception. The trials confirmed the system’s hit-to-kill capability across various engagement modes, including approaching, receding, and crossing targets.
The Defence Ministry stated that VSHORADS missiles, developed under the Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) mode, are now ready for early user trials and production. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ promoting indigenous defence manufacturing.
VSHORADS, a man-portable air defence system, was designed and developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners. The three branches of the Indian Armed Forces have been involved since the project’s inception.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised DRDO, the Armed Forces, and industry players for the successful trials, noting that the missile’s advanced technology would bolster India’s defence against aerial threats.
DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat also congratulated the teams involved in the successful tests.
