External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, outlined India’s approach to multilateralism, human rights, and global challenges during his visit to Switzerland from September 12-13. In Geneva, he engaged with leaders from international organizations, including United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, and World Health Organization Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, discussing cooperation in public health and promoting Traditional Medicine systems.
Dr. Jaishankar inaugurated India’s state-of-the-art Permanent Mission in Geneva and dedicated a statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. He also honored Smt. Hansa Mehta by naming a hall after her for her contributions to gender equality during the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, he planted a tree, External Affairs Ministery said in official statement.
He further addressed the Indian community in Geneva, highlighting India’s global vision. Dr. Jaishankar also delivered a talk titled “Global Tectonics: The Indian View of a World in Churn” at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), which was attended by diplomats, scholars, and members of the Indian diaspora.
In a special gesture, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis hosted Dr. Jaishankar for discussions focused on boosting trade and investments, particularly leveraging the Free Trade Agreement between India and EFTA States (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein). The leaders also exchanged views on global and regional issues of mutual interest.
