One person was killed, and property worth Rs 25 crore was damaged after a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst hit the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh early on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 3 am in the Parduni forest area, claiming the life of 37-year-old Rangi Ram from Parduni village. Media reports indicated that the flash floods destroyed five shops, two small bridges, two water mills, and a shed.
Heavy rainfall since Wednesday night also led to landslides, blocking several roads, including National Highway-5. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of potential light to moderate flooding in parts of Sirmaur, Kangra, Chamba, Solan, Kullu, Shimla, and Mandi districts.
Himachal Pradesh Cabinet Minister Vikramaditya Singh reported that the Public Works Department (PWD) has suffered nearly Rs 600 crore in losses this financial year, though this is lower than the previous year’s damages. Singh also mentioned that around 40 people have lost their lives this monsoon season and that the state is seeking assistance from the central government to manage the recovery efforts.
