The Centre, facing strong protests from Opposition parties and even some of its own allies, has directed the UPSC to cancel the advertisement for lateral entry recruitment that was issued on August 17. “It is crucial to uphold the constitutional mandate of social justice to ensure that deserving candidates from marginalized communities receive their rightful representation in government services. These positions were treated as specialized and designated as single-cadre posts, leaving no room for reservation in these appointments,” stated Jitendra Singh, Minister for the Department of Personnel and Training, in a letter to UPSC Chairperson Preeti Sudan.

“This issue must be reviewed and reformed in the context of PM Narendra Modi’s focus on ensuring social justice. Therefore, I urge the UPSC to cancel the advertisement for lateral entry recruitment issued on August 17,” Jitendra Singh added.

The Centre had come under fire from the Opposition for advertising 45 government posts without including Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and OBC quotas. “Furthermore, the PM firmly believes that the lateral entry process must align with the principles of equity and social justice enshrined in our Constitution, particularly concerning the provisions of reservations. For the PM, reservation in public employment is a cornerstone of our social justice framework, aimed at addressing historical injustices and promoting inclusivity,” Jitendra Singh emphasized.
