Noel Tata, the half-brother of the late industrialist Ratan Tata, has been appointed as the chairman of Tata Trusts. The philanthropic organizations play a crucial role in the $165 billion Tata Group. Tata Trusts, especially the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, are the primary shareholders of Tata Sons, collectively holding nearly 52% of the company. The leadership of Tata Trusts has historically been linked to the Tata family and the Parsi community.
Ratan Tata’s tenure marked the last occasion when a single individual held the chairmanship of both Tata Sons and Tata Trusts. This governance structure changed in 2022, when the company’s Articles of Association were amended to separate these roles, reflecting a significant shift in governance practices.
The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust are managed by a total of 13 trustees, with five serving as common trustees for both entities. Notable trustees include former defense secretary Vijay Singh, automobile industrialist Venu Srinivasan, and businessman Mehli Mistry. Other trustees include Pramit Jhaveri, former Citi India CEO, along with Ratan Tata’s younger brother Jimmy Tata and Jehangir H. C. Jehangir, CEO of Jehangir Hospital.
