BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala criticized the INDI Alliance, accusing it of siding with a rape accused, following the police encounter of Akshay Shinde, who was charged with sexually assaulting two minor girls in Badlapur, Maharashtra. Poonawala questioned whether the opposition had become a “Balatkari Bachao Party” (save rapist alliance), news outlet The Hindustan Times reported. . He remarked that while Maharashtra has “breathed a sigh of relief” following the encounter, the INDI Alliance appears to be “mourning the death of a rapist.
Poonawala also targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government, accusing the INDI Alliance of trying to protect the accused in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case. He further claimed that some Congress and INDI leaders are speaking in favor of rapists.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari echoed these sentiments, alleging that Congress and INDI leaders support rape accused individuals to cater to their vote bank, rather than standing with women.
Akshay Shinde, 24, was shot dead by police on Monday evening after allegedly attempting to snatch a gun while being transported in a police vehicle. Shinde’s family has rejected the police’s version of events, as per The Hindustan Times. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar has called for a judicial inquiry, alleging the encounter was an attempt to destroy evidence, particularly since some school trustees linked to the BJP remain absconding, The Indian Express reported.
