Delhi’s new Chief Minister, Atishi, officially took charge today, but not without a notable twist. Instead of occupying the Chief Minister’s chair, she chose to sit elsewhere, drawing a parallel to the Ramayana. Atishi invoked the character of Bharat, who governed Ayodhya during Lord Rama’s 14-year exile, suggesting she would similarly lead the Delhi government over the next four months.

During her inaugural press conference, Atishi praised former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for setting standards of morality and dignity in governance. She criticized the BJP for its attempts to undermine Kejriwal, stating, “The Supreme Court, upon granting him bail, highlighted that his arrest was executed with malicious intent.” Atishi expressed confidence that Kejriwal would reclaim his position through a democratic mandate in the future.

However, her actions drew criticism from Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, who accused Atishi of disrespecting constitutional norms and the office of the Chief Minister. He suggested she should have considered her approach more carefully before taking her oath of office.

Atishi was sworn in as Delhi’s third female Chief Minister on September 21 and officially assumed her duties today.
