At least 36 killed as bus falls into gorge in Uttarakhand

The death toll in a bus accident in Uttarakhand’s Almora district rose to 36 after a 45-seater passenger bus plunged into a 200-metre gorge at Marchula on Monday morning. The accident took place when bus was on it’s way from Garhwal to Kumaon, district officials said, according to media reports

Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) initiated a rescue operation at the site. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed condolences and instructed authorities to expedite relief efforts. “Received very sad news of casualties… The district administration has been instructed to conduct relief and rescue operations swiftly,” Dhami stated on social media platform X, according to the news outlet NDTV.

The administration and SDRF teams are working urgently to evacuate and transport the injured to local health centers. “Instructions have also been given to airlift critically injured passengers if necessary,” Dhami added.

The Chief Minister ordered the suspension of local RTO officials and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those killed, along with Rs 1 lakh for the injured. A magisterial inquiry has been launched to investigate the cause of the accident, the news outlet NDTV reported.
