Are panchayat elections round the corner in Punjab?

In a significant development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has convened a meeting with the Chief Secretary, State Election Commissioner, Advocate General, and senior officials from the Local Government and Rural Development departments. Sources reveal that this meeting has sparked speculation about the imminent announcement of elections for urban and rural civic bodies, including Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads. Elections for 13,241 Panchayats are due, as these were previously dissolved and administrators appointed.

The meeting’s significance is underscored by the impending elections for the Municipal Corporations of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Phagwara, Ludhiana, and Patiala. Additionally, the terms of other rural civic bodies are set to end in November.
