Angelina Jolie subtly referenced her strained relationship with Brad Pitt while discussing her new role as legendary opera star Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s upcoming biographical drama, Maria, The Hindustan reported. “There’s a lot I won’t say in this room that you probably know and assume,” Jolie remarked, according to IndieWire.

During a media interview at the Venice Film Festival, Jolie, known for her role in Original Sin, spoke about the challenges and personal significance of portraying Callas, a figure whose life was marked by both extraordinary talent and profound tragedy.

When asked whether she viewed the role as a path to a potential second Oscar, Jolie clarified her priorities, stating, “For me, the benchmark is whether I meet the expectations of Maria Callas fans and opera enthusiasts. My biggest fear is disappointing them.”

She further added, “I’m grateful for any recognition my work receives in the industry, but my main concern is honoring the legacy of Callas. I developed a deep respect for her, and I didn’t want to do her an injustice.”

Maria centers on the final chapter of Callas’ life in 1977, a period marked by struggles with substance abuse, a declining voice, and significant weight loss as she lived in Paris. Jolie’s performance captures this emotional period, portraying a once-revered artist grappling with deep personal and professional challenges in her final years.

Jolie’s own life has been under intense media scrutiny since her highly publicized separation from Pitt in September 2016, which has been fraught with allegations of abuse and has led to Pitt’s estrangement from their children. Reflecting on her personal connection to the role, Jolie noted that she identifies with Callas’ “vulnerability,” hinting at a deeper resonance beyond the character’s surface attributes.

Recalling her preparation, Jolie said, “I remember being so nervous. My sons were with me; they had to lock the door to ensure no one else could come in. I was trembling.”

She continued, “Pablo began our journey in a small room and concluded it at La Scala. I was terrified.”
