Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced significant progress in addressing the situation in Manipur, emphasizing border security as a key measure. Speaking on Thursday, Shah stated that the Indian government has initiated fencing along the India-Myanmar border, identifying it as a root cause of the unrest.
“Thirty kilometers of fencing has already been completed, and the central government has allocated a budget to cover the entire 1,500 km border,” Shah said. He also highlighted the strategic deployment of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to safeguard critical areas.
In a move to curb cross-border infiltration, Shah revealed that the government has nullified a previous agreement with Myanmar that allowed free movement of people across the border. “Entry into India is now permitted only with a visa,” he added.
Addressing the violence in Manipur, Shah said that there have been no significant incidents in the past three months. He expressed optimism about restoring peace: “We are hopeful to bring the situation under control.” Shah underscored the importance of dialogue between the local Kuki and Meitei communities, describing the conflict as racially charged. “We are in talks with both groups, and we have outlined a roadmap for a resolution,” he said.
